OUR SERVICES
Chiropractic
Chiropractic today is one of the largest primary-contact health care professions in Canada with over 6,500 practicing chiropractors.
Approximately four and a half million Canadians use the services of a chiropractor each year.
Chiropractors practice a drug-free, non-invasive, manual approach to health care that includes patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors assess patients for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, extremity joints, and their effect on the
neuromusculoskeletal system as a whole. The primary goal of chiropractic manipulation is to treat areas of decreased movement in
the joints of the body, particularly the spine, which can create a reaction in surrounding tissues (ligaments, muscles and nerves)
resulting in pain, dysfunction and muscular spasm. Chiropractors are also trained to recommend therapeutic exercise,
to utilize other non-invasive therapies, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counselling.
Spinal manipulation, as practiced by trained chiropractors, is a highly controlled procedure, which rarely causes discomfort.
The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients often note positive changes in
their symptoms immediately following treatment.
At The Spine Institute, we use treatment methods that combine osseous manipulation (hands-on adjustments) with soft-tissue
technique, such as Active Release Technique. These treatments are supplemented by specific rehabilitation exercises that strengthen
weakened muscle groups, improve flexibility, and assist in preventing conditions from returning.
Medical Acupuncture
Medical Acupuncture is the biomedical adaptation of Chinese acupuncture methods, and is an effective and simple treatment
approach based on current concepts of neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and pathophysiology. As in traditional acupuncture,
Medical Acupuncture involves insertion of solid needles at relevant points on the body in combination with manual needle
stimulation or electrical stimulation. Medical Acupuncture does not involve tongue or pulse diagnosis. A diagnosis is attained
through thorough history taking and physical examination. Based on this process, anatomical points that are relevant to the
condition are selected for needling.
Patients all over the world now seek acupuncture treatment in its various forms for a multitude of ailments including pain relief,
headaches, arthritis, addiction management, sports injuries and general well-being, to name a few.
The benefits of acupuncture can include, but are not limited to:
-
pain relief
-
decreased swelling
-
muscle relaxation
-
breaking down scar tissue
-
pain modulation and endorphin release
-
changes in autonomic nervous system activity (vasomotor tone, cardiac rhythm, peristalsis etc.)
-
diverse neuroendocrine and immune responses
-
general relaxation
-
a feeling of psychophysical well being
-
improved sleep
-
nausea relief during chemotherapy
Medical acupuncture is very often used as an effective adjunct to the following treatments: chiropractic, massage therapy
or physiotherapy.
Registered Massage Therapy
Massage Therapy is the manipulation of superficial and deep layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance function,
promote relaxation and overall wellbeing. Massage therapy involves acting on and manipulating the body with pressure – stationary,
or moving – tension, motion, or vibration, done manually or with mechanical aids. Target tissues may include muscles, tendons,
ligaments, skin, fascia, joints, or other connective tissues, as well as lymphatic vessels, or organs of the gastrointestinal system.
There are over eighty different recognized massage modalities.
In professional clinical settings, massage therapy involves the client being treated while lying on a massage therapy table.
The massage therapy subject may be fully or partly unclothed, or may choose to remain completely clothed. Parts of the body
will be covered with towels or sheets. Certain techniques require the use of lotion while other techniques do not.
Traction and moving the limbs thru range of motion is also common to massage therapy practice.
Kinesiology Taping
Kinesiology taping gives support and stability to your joints and muscles without affecting circulation and range of motion. It is also
used for preventive maintenance, swelling, and pain management.
These taping techniques exhibit their effect through the activation of neurological and circulatory systems in the body.
Also, the means by which taping techniques work essentially are related to the concept of proprioception, or your body’s ability to
know where it is in space.
Kinesiology tape is applied over muscles to reduce pain and inflammation, relax overused tired muscles, and to support muscles
in movement on a 24hr/day basis. It is non-restrictive type of taping which allows for full range of motion.
Custom Foot Orthotics
At The Spine Institute we offer a wide variety of custom made orthotics.
Custom foot orthotics are designed to maintain proper alignment in the joints of the foot or to provide necessary support to the
structures of the foot. This may be helpful in the effective treatment of low back, hip, knee, or foot pain.
We each have our own body architecture, and sometimes our unique structures move and function in ways that cause imbalances
and damage to other parts of our body. Orthotics are appliances designed to support the body and correct biomechanical imbalances
in structure. You may have used generic foot orthotics and found them to be inefficient in providing support.
In comparison, custom-made foot orthotics are precision medical devices made specifically to fit your feet and correct your particular alignment problems.
